A world-class cast of plenary speakers has been invited to address the Congress. These speakers will challenge the status quo, propose challenging new ideas, and set the tone for our discussions. The plenary session topics include the development of science centres in Africa, the role of technology in modern society, ethnomathematics, international development of science centres and informal science education programmes, the importance of Indigenous Knowledge Systems, major trends in the science centre movement worldwide, findings of recent research on the effectiveness of science centres, use of modern technology to deliver science education programmes, and examples of multinational collaborative programmes. The final plenary session will launch the Cape Town Declaration and announce the next Congress. To view the profiles of some of our invited speakers, click here.
Delegates to the 6SCWC responded magnificently to the call for proposals for the 60 concurrent sessions. A range of challenging and inspiring topics have been proposed and accepted that strongly address the Congress theme and sub-themes and provide a comprehensive overview of strategic thinking in the science centre community today. Exciting multinational teams have been assembled to present and debate these topics during the concurrent sessions.
Topics in the concurrent sessions include dealing with contentious topics, climate change and health issues, building sustainable collateral through international relations, science and religion, the role of social media, bridging indigenous knowledge and Western science, capacity building, rethinking the science centre model, engaging the unengaged, outcomes of recent research on science centres, development of science centres in the NAMES region and in China, the role of science journalists, implementation of the Toronto Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals, social inclusion, the role of geoparks, children?s museums, scientists and science centres, the role of science festivals, and responsibilities for the future.
In addition, some challenging and inspiring topics will also be addressed
during the poster sessions, demonstrations and science cafes.
There is something for everyone in the programme, whether you work in a science centre or in a traditional museum, outdoor park, zoo, aquarium, visitor centre, botanical garden or the corporate exhibitions environment. We predict that you will have some difficult decisions to make as to which concurrent sessions you attend, but we have no doubt that you will have an inspiring and enjoyable time!
