Hawk migration in Duluth
September 24, 2009 - 9:19 PM
Raptors are moving past Hawk Ridge in Duluth in good numbers, but there has yet to be one of those unforgettable days when tens of thousands of Broad-winged Hawks soar over the ridge. Best days have been since Sept. 15, but no Broad-winged count has exceeded 8,000. As of the 23rd, just over 20,000 Broad-wings have been counted, and about 29,000 raptors total. There are still many good days ahead if you want to drive up and experience one of Minnesota's -and North America's - highlight birding experiences.

Broad-Winged Hawk Migration
Here's a little tidbit I thought I would pass on from the Great Smoky Mountains Association newsletter:
This is the time of year to have your binoculars at the ready as these neotropical migrants gather in flocks, or kettles, to head for their winter grounds in Southern Mexico, Central America, and northern South America, with some immature birds over-wintering in southern Florida.
