Usted puede tener su propia laptop de $100 USD pero le va a costar $400 USD. Un proyecto sin fines de lucro del MIT Media Lab ha estado trabajando por años para producir una laptop de cien dólares. El objetivo de este proyecto (conocido como una laptop por niñ@  o OLPC, por sus siglas en Inglés) es poner tecnología fiable y robusta en las manos de los niñ@s  de los países más pobres. Nicholas Negroponte dirige el proyecto con la ayuda de muchos científicos y educadores alrededor del mundo (incluyendo a David Cavallo, quien visita Costa Rica frecuentemente y también colaboradora con CIENTEC). La laptop llamada XO es fuerte, usa muy poquita electricidad, incluye cámara, tiene conexión inalámbrica con otras computadoras en el área y es completamente de fuente abierta. ¿Cómo pueden hacer una laptop por $100? Esto sólo es posible con una economía de escala. Originalmente la idea era que estas fueran accesibles sólo a gobiernos de ciertos países y solamente por la orden de un millón de unidades. Como se puede imaginar, bajar el precio a $100 va a costar un poco y requiere de  tiempo para conseguir esas ordenes de un millón de computadoras (Uruguay, sin embargo, ha ordenado 100,000). Hasta el momento han logrado negociar el precio de estas unidades tan bajo como $200 cada una. Y han ideado un plan ingenioso para empezar a manufacturarlas. Si usted esta dispuesto a comprar 2 de estas computadoras y donar 1 al programa que será entregada a un niño/a del tercer mundo. Usted puede conservar la otra. You too can own the $100 laptop, but it will cost you $400. A non-profit project originating in the MIT Media Lab has been working for years to produce the hundred dollar laptop. The goal of this project (known as one laptop per child or olpc) is to get reliable, robust technology into the hands of children in the world's poorest countries. Nicholas Negroponte directs the project with the collaboration of many scientists and educators around the world (including David Cavallo, frequent visitor to CR and collaborator with CIENTEC). The laptop, called the XO, is rugged, uses very little electricity, includes a camera, networks wirelessly with other computers in the area, and is completely open-source. How can they make a laptop for $100? It's only possible with economies of scale. Originally, the idea was that they would be available only to governments of selected countries, and only if at least a million computers were ordered. As you can imagine, it will still take some effort to get the price down to $100, and some time to get those million-computer orders. (Uruguay, however, has ordered 100,000.) So far, they have gotten the cost of these units down to about $200 each. And they have come up with an ingenious plan for how to start manufacturing: If you're willing to buy TWO of these computers, and donate one to the project, to be given to a child in a third-world country, you can keep the other one for yourself.
